A LITTLE CONTEXT

Number Trail: a free browser game

Number Trail is a number path puzzle from one through twenty-five. Begin at the given 1 and extend an unbroken sequence through neighboring squares until every square is used. A handful of fixed numbers constrain where the trail can go. The twelve layouts are geometric variants of two original continuous paths. More than one legal completion may exist; any full route satisfying the displayed clues is accepted.

How to play Number Trail

  1. Place consecutive numbers using horizontal or vertical neighbors. Diagonal moves and jumps are not allowed.
  2. Use each square exactly once. Given numbers reserve their square for that value in the sequence.
  3. Fill the board with a complete 1–25 route that agrees with every clue. The reference route is one example, not a uniqueness claim.
TAKE THE NEXT GOOD STEP

Number Trail strategy

Count the distance to a given

If the next fixed number is only three steps away in value, its square must be reachable in exactly that many moves. A detour that uses too many squares cannot arrive on time.

Protect corners and edges

A corner has only two neighbors. Leaving it isolated behind your current trail can make a later visit impossible. Consider the board’s shape as well as the next number.

Undo before a dead end grows

When no legal next square remains, revisit the most recent branch. Undo removes only the final placement, so you can explore a different turn without losing the whole route.

A worked example

If the current end is 7 and a neighboring clue square says 9, you cannot enter that square yet. Place 8 somewhere else that permits a following move to the fixed 9. A diagonal square never counts as a neighbor.

Questions about Number Trail

Can I place the numbers in any order?

No. The trail grows consecutively from 1. The player supplies the next number when you choose its square.

Can I reuse a square?

No. Each number needs its own square. Undo is the way to remove a previous placement.

Does every puzzle have one unique answer?

A tested reference route exists, but this practice does not claim uniqueness. A different full route that respects the clues can also win.

How does the guide differ from a hint?

The guide shows a complete example arrangement. It does not solve from your current partial trail or guarantee that every existing placement agrees with that route.
